History Field Marshal Plaek Pibunsongkhram is the third Prime Minister in Thailand. He was elected to office in December 1938. He decided that each town should have its own flea market to facilitate local trade and to boost local economies. He had Bangkok on his mind so he declared that Sanam Luang would have a flea marketplace.
This would be the first city market since 1942. The government decided to change the location as it was required for special events. The decision was made to relocate to Saranrom Palace in central Bangkok. The market remained there eight years, until being moved to Sanam Chai.
It was only a brief return as Bangkok celebrated its 200th anniversary. This meant that the location of the market had to change again. The market moved to Chatuchak in 1982 as an permanent landmark. The iconic Clocktower, built in celebration of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th Birthday, was constructed five years later.
In the end, Chatuchak Market was renamed. Since its move from Sanam Luang, the popularity of this market has increased significantly. It hosts 200,000 people each weekend, and boasts over 15,000 stalls. This makes it the largest weekend market in the world.
